One day, not too long ago, I woke up and looked in the mirror and it hit me... I was out of shape, exhausted, and living a life with no control. I was just going through the motions and in denial about it all. Life was stressful, I was anxious and desperately wanting things to just change on its own. I didn't want to have to own up to my the reality that my life choices, daily habits, and behaviors were creating this life. I didn't want to have to face my insecurities and self-doubt. I just knew I needed to lose weight. Once I lost the weight, my life would be back in order!
And I was a personal trainer! I know exactly what to do so everything is ok! But I kept starting and stopping, over and over. Every Monday become a new start week! And with each "start over" I became more frustrated and beat myself up more and more for not succeeding! I was a personal trainer for goodness sake! What was wrong with me?
In 2013, I walked across stage in a tiny blue bikini and heels at my first fitness competition. To prepare, I ate nothing but chicken and rice pretty much. I drank nothing but water and said no to every single sweet! I even took almonds to the movie theatre. I worked out for about 90 minutes every day doing strength and HIIT. I did this for months. It worked. But it didn't last. And I thought, I'll just do that again and get the weight off. But that was miserable. And the thought of living like that again made me want to devour everything in sight. I realized that during that time, I was using my competition as an escape and a way to not focus on the things in my life that were making me miserable. I knew that was not the answer to getting back control and feeling confident and strong again. It was after quite a bit of self reflection and just feeling so blah, that I realized the reason I was struggling to make the changes was that I wasn't happy with myself. I realized I needed to deal with the behaviors that were causing me stay stuck. I needed to own up to my choices, give myself forgiveness, reconnect with myself, and take back control of my entire life, not just the weight!
When we are able to approach our goals from a place of love instead of a place of feeling like we need to "fix" ourselves then it so much easier to make lasting change. We need to focus more on the behaviors and habits, rather than the end result. If we focus all of our attention on the weight loss and think that losing weight is the answer to creating confidence in our life, then we will always be striving for more weight loss. But if we develop the habits that cultivate confidence, self-love, and an overall healthy lifestyle, then the weight loss happens naturally and we become the confident, energetic, happy, and healthy version of ourselves that we are proud of! It just become who you are!
